Cystic
Fibrosis Pediatric Clinic
The cystic fibrosis clinic at Victoria General Hospital
is currently the only clinic for children and adolescents
(age 0-18 yrs) on Vancouver Island. It has been operating
since 1983. Team members available for specialized
cystic fibrosis family support include a medical director,
cystic fibrosis nurse coordinator, dietician, physiotherapist,
pharmacist, psychologist, social worker, and respiratory
therapist. Clinics are held monthly (usually the first
Wednesday of the month) from September through July
in the CFAU department on the 2 nd floor of the Victoria
General Hospital. Families will be contacted in advance
for appointment dates and times (or call the booking
nurse at (250) 727-4299). Upon arrival to the clinic
each family is assigned a private room to minimize
the risk of cross-infection. Team members circulate
through each room. These rooms are small and parents
of small children are advised to bring some toys to
occupy their children while waiting.
Whenever possible, Pulmonary Function Tests (done at Royal Jubilee Hospital)
will be scheduled on the same day as the clinic if from out of town or on another
day if living in town. Chest X-rays and blood tests are done once yearly unless
special circumstances require them to be done more often. The flu vaccine is
available in early fall and can be given on the day of the clinic or a separate
appointment at another time. The hospital will supply Emla cream (a topical
anaesthetic) prior to a child's flu shot or blood work. We work closely with
the local cystic fibrosis chapter and the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic in order
to encourage communication and support for families. |
Cystic
Fibrosis Adult Clinic
The Victoria Adult Cystic
Fibrosis Clinic, currently located at the Royal
Jubilee Hospital, has served adults living with
cystic fibrosis on Vancouver Island since 1992.
Our specialized team of health care professionals
work in partnership with the adult with cystic
fibrosis, their significant others and their
community to provide quality care and assist
them to make personal health care choices that
support optimal health.
CF clinics are held 18
times per year, usually the first and third Thursday
of the month, in Clinic 3 at the Diagnostic and
Treatment Centre at the Jubilee Hospital. No
clinics are held during July and August. If needed,
hospital admissions are directed to the Acute
Care Respiratory Unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital
where the CF team and experienced nursing staff
provide care.
The Adult CF team works closely
with the Victoria Pediatric CF team to provide
a smooth transition from their clinic to adult
care. We frequently work on joint projects and
educational opportunities to improve care that
can benefit all persons living with CF in our
area. The adult team also supports the local
Cystic Fibrosis Chapter in supporting the goals
of the Canadian CF Foundation and in providing
support to our local families.
